A new cryptic species of Serrasalmus (Characiformes: Serrasalmidae), from the Río Madeira in Bolivia
Normal issue
Serrasalmus castellonii, new species, is described from the upper Río Madeira basin, Bolivia. The new species is similar to Serrsalmus compressus as it shares a similar color pattern. It is diagnosed from S. compressus by shallow body depth (55-62% vs. 64-67% of SL) and fourth dorsal height (19-20% vs. 21-23% of SL). The genetic analysis of CO1 showed low divergence (mean values less than 1%) among the related species S. castellonii, S. compressus and Serrasalmus sp.
